Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards and Republican challenger Eddie Rispone will face off in a November 16th run-off. Edwards received 47-percent of the vote in the gubernatorial primary and plans to campaign on the accomplishments during his first term. Rispone received 27-percent of the vote and now has the support of the third-place finisher in the race, Congressman Ralph Abraham. Rispone says with the help of voters he can make Louisiana one of the best states in the country.

Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says Governor Edwards 47 percent showing in the primary is a bad sign for his chances of being the first incumbent Louisiana Governor to win a run-off. Pinsonat says Edwards lagged statewide despite having a remarkable day in Orleans Parish. Edwards secured 87 percent of the vote in Orleans Parish.

Pinsonat says now that there’s only one Republican in the race the state and national party can focus all of it’s attention on boosting Eddie Rispone as a specific alternative to Governor Edwards.

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon will serve another four years after defeating fellow GOP challenger Tim Temple.  Donelon received 53% of the vote and says the victory comes after an intense campaign where his opponent self-funded $1.1 million into the race. Donelon, who was first appointed to the position in 2006, is now the longest-serving Insurance Commissioner in the state’s history. Donelon says the work to bring down car insurance rates continues. Donelon believes the key to lowering car insurance rates is through tort reform so that the state doesn’t have such a friendly litigation climate.
